This book is FANTASTIC!

Kaufman Field Guide to the Birds of America

My tried and true field guide.

As a new birder, this was the first field guide that resonated with me and I still carry a copy with me in my car. Yes, I use the other guides too, but I always come back to this one. Waiting for Kenn to do an updated version! Or an app! Come on Kenn!

Field Guide to North American Flycatchers

If you love flycatchers as much as I do, this book will be a gamechanger for your ID skills.

The identification of Empidonax flycatchers and pewees can be a daunting challenge for even the most seasoned birder. Field Guide to North American Flycatchers takes bird identification to an entirely new level by training readers to observe subtle differences in structure, color patterns, and vocalizations before delving into the finer details of a particular species.

Listers

Hilarious doesn't begin to cover it.

Two brothers - Quentin and Owen Reiser document their attempt at a “big year,” trying to identify, in a year, as many birds in the US as they can. Brand new birders, they purchase a mini-van and head out. Along the way...well, watch the film on YouTube and find out. You can also check out an article, by National Audubon, about the documentary here.
