Haverstraw Bay County Park
Overview
Haverstraw Bay County Park is a 27-acre waterfront park located along the Hudson River. The park offers a protected boat launch, picnic areas, an open-air pavilion, playgrounds, and a network of nature and walking trails.
Birding Haverstraw Bay County Park
Despite its modest size, Haverstraw Bay County Park has an impressive 167 documented bird species and is well worth a visit.
Be sure to bird the Hudson River shoreline, explore the freshwater pond and wetlands, and check the wooded edges for migrating songbirds.
After passing the pond, turn left at the brick art installation (which I like to call modern Stonehenge) and follow the trail to the boardwalk. This area can be particularly productive during migration.
During the colder months, it’s worth scanning the landfill across the road for Horned Larks, American Pipits, and Snow Buntings. While you’re there, be sure to carefully check any flocks of Canada Geese—a Pink-footed Goose was recently discovered among them.
