Kennedy Dells County Park

Overview

The 179 acre park was once owned in the early part of the century by the well-known movie producer Adolph Zukor. At that time, New City was thought to be the future Hollywood of the east.  Flat rolling topography. The extreme westerly portion is heavily wooded and along the western boundary of the park is a scenic creek, paralleled by a trail.

Birding Kennedy Dells

Kennedy Dells may be fairly small, but it has an extensive trail system that can be a little confusing for first-time visitors, so be sure to take a photo of the trail map before heading out.

My preferred route begins at the parking lot closest to the woods. Enter the woods immediately and follow the perimeter trail along the park boundary. After passing a field on your right, bear left to continue birding along the creek. Follow the trail as it passes behind a neighborhood and along the edge of a golf course.

At this point, you have a few options. Continue straight, or take the small incline uphill. The uphill route will bring you through a beautiful pine grove — keep your eyes open for owl pellets along the way!

Continue until you see a small trail branching off to the left. This will bring you out of the woods and onto a paved path. Turn left to return to the parking area, or explore the field to your right and the enchanting wetland beyond.

As you become more familiar with the park, explore the interior trails as well. Be sure to look up — you may just spot a Barred Owl!

Visitor Information

Restrooms

  • Yes-seasonally (although be sure to test out anyway-lately the park has been leaving the restrooms open in winter).

Accessibility

  • Trails through the woods can be uneven, with many exposed roots.

  • Kennedy Dells is a popular spot for dog walkers. Arriving early is a great way to enjoy a quieter birding experience and catch the birds before the crowds arrive.  The early bird catches the worm and the early birder sees the birds without distraction!

Fees

  • None
