Marine Nature Study Area

Overview

The Marine Nature Study Area (MNSA) is a 52-acre saltmarsh sanctuary located in Oceanside, Long Island. Opened on Earth Day in 1970, this unique preserve protects an important coastal ecosystem where tidal waters, marsh vegetation, and surrounding communities meet.

Despite being surrounded by suburban development, the MNSA offers visitors an opportunity to experience the beauty and diversity of a functioning salt marsh ecosystem. Its tidal creeks, ponds, mudflats, and marsh grasses support a wide variety of wildlife.

Birding MNSA

The Marine Nature Study Area is an excellent location for observing coastal and marsh birds throughout the year. The saltmarsh habitat provides feeding and nesting areas for a variety of species, including Yellow-crowned Night Herons, egrets, Forster’s Terns, Clapper Rails, Saltmarsh Sparrows, Seaside Sparrows, and a variety of shorebirds. If you would like to watch a Yellow-crowned Night Heron stalking its prey-this is the place for you!

An impressive 267 bird species have been documented at this little gem of a spot!

The changing tides reveal different opportunities for birding, from shorebirds feeding along mudflats to herons and egrets hunting in shallow waters. During migration, the marsh becomes an important stopover habitat for birds traveling along the Atlantic Flyway.

Beyond birding, the MNSA is a place to learn about coastal ecology. The preserve’s educational programs, interpretive displays, and accessibility to the public make it a valuable resource for students, naturalists, and anyone interested in understanding Long Island’s saltmarsh ecosystems.
