Harriman SP - Silvermine Lake

Overview

Silver Mine Lake is located within Harriman State Park and offers a variety of habitats, making it a rewarding birding destination throughout the year. The park offers a range of outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, and picnicking. Visitors can explore the park's scenic trails, enjoy a day of fishing in the Silver Mine area, or relax in the picnic grounds.

With wetlands, forest, and open grassland and shrubland habitats, Silver Mine is a great place to find a wide variety of species. From Eastern Bluebirds to nesting Cliff and Barn Swallows to Acadian Flycatchers, more than 165 species have been documented here.

Almost every area of the park can be productive. Be sure to explore the edges of the large parking area, the lake, the forested trails, and the open habitats.

For a quieter birding experience, head down the BBQ picnic area road (be prepared—it is very bumpy and rough - also, be aware that the picnic area can be crowded-at times it may feel as though you are running the gauntlet!). Along the way, look and listen for species such as Pine Warblers, Black-capped Chickadees, and Acadian Flycatchers.

At the end of the road, follow the trail through the gate to the large open area. This is one of my favorite spots at Silver Mine! The mix of open habitat and surrounding forest makes it a great place to slow down, listen, and see what turns up. Eastern Bluebirds can be seen year-round, and in the winter, Fox Sparrows can be observed poking around the shrubby vegetation. During breeding season, look for Tree Swallows using the nest boxes.
