Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site

Overview

 Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site offers a unique combination of history and nature along the Hudson River. The site preserves the location of the Battle of Stony Point, one of the final Revolutionary War battles in the Hudson Valley.

The Stony Point Lighthouse, built in 1826, is the oldest lighthouse on the Hudson River. It operated for nearly a century before being decommissioned in 1925 and now serves as a reminder of the important role lighthouses played in navigation and commerce along the river. Visitors can explore the museum, learn about the Battle of Stony Point and lighthouse history, and enjoy seasonal interpretive programs including living history demonstrations, cannon and musket firings, and historic cooking programs.

Birding Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site

In addition to its historic significance, Stony Point also offers good birding. The site contains several habitats, including freshwater wetlands along the entrance road, open areas, scrubby vegetation, and views overlooking the Hudson River. Look for eagles and osprey as well as any surprise birds flying along the river.

From the parking area, take a walk behind the workers’ shed — the shrubs in this small open area can be especially productive during migration. Continue toward the shoreline to scan for winter waterfowl on the river. continue back toward the entrance road and check the freshwater wetlands along the left side of the road.

After exploring the lower section, head back past the parking area and continue up the entrance road for additional birding opportunities. Although compact, Stony Point has recorded 166 species on eBird, making it a worthwhile stop for both local birders and visitors exploring the Hudson Valley.
