The Danger of Discarded Fishing Line

Discarded fishing line is a silent but deadly hazard. It routinely entangles and kills birds, fish, turtles, frogs, and small mammals. Hooks left attached to the line can cause severe internal injuries if swallowed. When embedded in the tongue—a common occurrence—they prevent animals from eating, often leading to starvation.

Many birds are found with fishing line wrapped tightly around their legs, wings, or beaks. Some are discovered hanging upside down from trees, exhausted after struggling for hours to free themselves.

What You Can Do

  • Please dispose of used fishing line in designated receptacles whenever possible.

  • If a receptacle isn’t available, cut the line into small pieces before throwing it away to prevent entanglement.
