Lake Welch Beach State Park

Overview

Lake Welch is a popular recreation area within Harriman State Park that remains a productive birding destination throughout the year. The lake is surrounded by wooded habitat, with opportunities to find a variety of species along the shoreline, entrance road, and surrounding areas. Migration and early breeding season can be especially rewarding.

Although the area includes a popular beach, concession area, and numerous picnic areas, it is still possible to find quieter areas, particularly during the winter months.

Birding Here

For the best birding experience, arrive early before the crowds. The boat launch and trail are generally productive, as are the lakeside path, entrance road, and edges of the parking lots.

Birders can also park in the main lot and walk along Lake Welch Drive, which can be especially rewarding during migration and early breeding season.

Look for winter waterfowl in the lake is unfrozen and in fall, it is especially fun to observe vultures roosting on the lifeguard chairs and nearby trees.

Please do not enter the campground at any time of year. Be especially mindful during camping season when the area is actively in use.
