Rockland Lake State Park/Nature Center
Overview
Rockland Lake State Park is centered around a scenic lake perched on a ridge of Hook Mountain above the west bank of the Hudson River.
Why Bird Here
It can be interesting year-round, but the lake really comes to life during winter, when hundreds of ducks gather on the open water. Common and Hooded Mergansers, Wood Duck, Northern Shoveler, American Coot (you haven’t lived until you’ve watched one running across the ice!), Great Blue Herons, and many other species can be found here. The fisherman’s lot, as well as lot 3, are great places to start. The entire length of the path is just a hair above 3 miles.
Nature Center
Open April 1 through December 1, the Nature Center and surrounding boardwalks can be fantastic during spring and fall migration. The boardwalk also passes through areas rich in native plants, making it an enjoyable destination for botanists and naturalists as well as birders.
